All items in the Health Sciences Library collection are accessible via the online library catalogue. Books are arranged according to the Library of Congress classification system. A synopsis of the classification system is available on the side of bookshelves as a broad guide for clients. Please consult the online library catalogue to find specific items. Books that are not available at any of University of Stellenbosch libraries can be traced via SACat on Sabinet Online. This database lists all books held in South African libraries. The Library Service renders a free interlibrary loan service to all staff members, registered students and prospective postgraduate students of the University. It is important to check the catalogue to ensure that the required item is not held at the Health Sciences Library before requesting an interlibrary loan. Click here for requesting procedures. Reference & short loan collection Reference and short loan materials are kept in the foyer near the reference desk. Short loan materials, i.e. publications that are used frequently, are transfered to the reference section largely on request of academic staff in order to ensure maximal access to a specific item. Short loan items carry pink markers and may be borrowed for brief lending periods only, including overnight and weekend loans. Reference material carry green markers and may not be borrowed. (Top) Theses are interfiled with the books. For a list of all the health sciences dissertations, use the online library catalogue and type health sciences and dissertations in all fields of the keyword search. For Stellenbosch dissertations on health sciences, type health sciences stellenbosch and dissertations. Theses may not be borrowed except if the Library owns more than one copy of a specific title. Theses that are available at the University of Stellenbosch can be traced via the Union Catalogue for Theses and Dissertations (UCTD) on Sabinet Online. UCTD contains bibliographic records of theses and dissertations at South African universities. Honorary doctorates are also included. Audio-visual and CD-ROM collection
The audio-visual collection is located next to the library's computer area and arranged according to the Library of Congress system. CD-ROMs are kept in the computer area near the library's entrance and may be borrowed for three days. Audio-visual sources produced by the University of Stellenbosch Faculty of Health Sciences are now being transferred to a digital format, so as to give more clients of the University of Stellenbosch access to these sources by means of a video database via the network. Audio-visual
resources consist of multimedia kits, CD-Roms and videos, either purchased or
filmed by the Tygerberg Media Centre for Health Sciences.
Audio-visual sources are available on loan to staff members and
post-graduate students. The lending privileges are five items for one
week at a time.
