Biomed Central  an online publisher that specialises in biological and medical research, provides researchers with the opportunity to publish free of charge and also provides free and open access to the peer-reviewed journals that they publish.

Cinahl provides comprehensive coverage of the English journal literature related to nursing and the allied health fields such as Cardiopulmonary technology, Emergency services, Health education, Med/Lab technology, Medical assistance, Medical records Occupational therapy, Physical therapy, Radiology technology, Respiratory therapy, Consumer health and Alternative/Complementary therapies. It also provides references to new books and audiovisuals in nursing and allied health fields, dissertations, selected conference proceedings and standards of professional practice. Cochrane Library contains high-quality, independent evidence to inform healthcare decision–making. It includes reliable evidence from Cochrane and other systematic reviews, clinical trials, and more. Cochrane reviews bring you the combined results of the world’s best medical research studies, and are recognised as the gold standard in evidence–based healthcare.

Ebscohost  A collection of databases, including Academic Search, Cinahl and Medline, which offers full-text access to nearly 1,850 scholarly journals, including more than 1,250 peer-reviewed titles. Covers general science, multi-cultural studies, education and health titles.

Findarticles.com A free-based archive of searchable articles form over 300 magazines and journals dating from 1998, covering topics such as business, health, society and sports. Published as a joint effort between the Gale Group and LookSmart. Needs open Inetkey.

Food Science and Technology Abstracts (FSTA)  Contains international literature on food science, technology, and human nutrition.  Links to selected full-text articles are provided.

GreenFILE indexes scholarly and general interest titles, as well as government documents and reports. It offers a unique perspective on the positive and negative ways humans affect the environment. Drawing on the connection between the environment and disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology, GreenFILE serves as an informative resource for anyone concerned about the issues facing our planet. The database contains nearly 300,000 records, full text for selected titles.

Henry Stewart Talks a collection of specially prepared animated audiovisual presentations with synchronized narration by world leading scientists is keeping researchers informed throughout the  world. The resource is organised into comprehensive series of talks and is regularly expanded and updated.

London Dysmorphology Database

MD Consult For Stellenbosch University clients.  Provides full-text access to >51 renowned medical texts; articles from more than 40 clinical journals, including many of the Clinics of North America series; practice guidelines; drug information for 30 000 medications; 3 500 patient education handouts and daily medical updates customized for a given specialty.

Medknow Publications  a fully open access publisher of high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarly journals. Search across multiple journals (needs open InetKey)

Medline PubMed  From the National Library of Medicine.  Covers the international literature on biomedicine, including the allied health fields and the biological and physical sciences, humanities, and information science as they relate to medicine and health care. Information is indexed from approximately 4 600 journals published world-wide.

OT Seeker  Occupational therapy database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and randomized controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy. Trials have been critically appraised.

Pedro  Physiotherapy Evidence Database developed to give rapid access to bibliographic details and abstracts of randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in physiotherapy.   Most trials on the database have been rated for quality to help you quickly discriminate between trials which are likely to be valid and interpretable and those which are not.

ProQuest Medical Library  A partly full-text, comprehensive database combining MEDLINE indexing with full images for more than 200 key medical titles. Offers coverage of all the major healthcare specialties, including nursing, pediatrics, neurology, pharmacology, cardiology, physical therapy, and others.

PsychArticles from the American Psychological Association (APA), is a definitive source of full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology. The database contains more than 137,000 articles from 66 journals - 50 published by the APA, and its imprint the Educational Publishing Foundation (EPF), and from allied organizations including the Canadian Psychology Association and Hogrefe Publishing G.

Refworks is a web-based research management service, similar in function to products such as EndNote, Reference Manager and ProCite.  It allows users to easily gather, manage, store and share all types of information, as well as automatic formatting of the paper and the bibliography. There is no charge for use to Stellenbosch University staff and students.    Users create their own personal accounts on RefWorks and may log in from anywhere. The RefWorks Write-N-Cite feature allows for automatic formatting of footnotes, endnotes and bibliographies in papers using Word.

RHL Library The WHO Reproductive Health Library (logon codes as well as open InetKey needed)
RHL assembles the best evidence, categorizes treatments by what works and what doesn’t, discusses implications for practice and includes practical resources such as videos and training courses. The core content contains over 300 articles about evidence-based practices in reproductive health.

Science Direct from Elsevier.  Full-text collection of over 1 million articles from 1995 to present. Covers a variety of subject areas and disciplines, including biochemistry, biological sciences, business, chemistry, earth sciences, economics, mathematics, neurosciences, physics and social sciences.

Scopus is an extensive abstract and citation database of research literature and quality web sources. Features include 15,400 peer-reviewed journals, over 1200 open access journals, 33 million abstracts, results from 386 million scientific web pages, over 3,6 million conference papers, 22 million patent records from 5 patent offices and seamless links to full-text articles.
 
South African Catalogue - OCLC  The SA Cat national union catalogue reflects the stock of libraries in Southern Africa.

Scriver's OMMBID Online Metabolic & Molecular Bases of Inherited Disease.The essential resource for comprehensive coverage of the role of the genes and genetic mechanisms in all human disease – from PKU to coronary artery disease, from chromosomal disorders to cancer.

Sport Discus  Username: sport; password: sport. This database is provided by the Sport Information Resource Centre and offers comprehensive, bibliographic coverage of sport, fitness and related disciplines and contains over 600, 000 records with journal and book coverage and going back to 1800.

SpringerLink is one of the world's leading interactive databases for high-quality Science, Technology, Medicine journals, book series, books, reference works and the Online Archives Collection. SpringerLink is a powerful central access point for researchers and scientists.

UpToDate Online is a comprehensive evidence-based clinical information resource designed to get physicians the concise, practical answers they need.
