Stellenbosch
University funds open access

Professor Warnich: Department of Genetics, Stellenbosch University
Earlier this year Stellenbosch University Library
and Information Service created an Open Access Fund to support
Stellenbosch University researchers publishing in open access
journals.
The Open Access Fund entails:
-
Subsidising author fees for publishing in open
access journals
- Institutional memberships with Open Access publishers such as
BioMed Central (BMC) and Public Library of Science (PLoS).
Institutional membership endorses open access publishing and allows
for the subsidising of author fees of Stellenbosch University
researchers publishing in these journals.
- Subsidising author fees for publishing in regular journals where
an additional fee is required to allow open access to an author's
published article.
The Library is pleased to announce that the first
open access article has been funded and published under the auspices
of the new Fund. The article, entitled "Pharmacogenomic Research in
South Africa: Lessons Learned and Future Opportunities in the
Rainbow Nation", has been published in Current Pharmacogenomics
and Personalized Medicine, Volume 9 (3), September 2011:
pp.191-207. In an editorial report this article by Louise Warnich
and co-authors is described as "a lead expert review article that
examines how best to approach new genomics biotechnologies in a
manner that carefully considers the public health needs and extant
disease burden in South Africa". Strategic directions that future
personalised medicine research should take in South Africa are also
evaluated.
Louise Warnich
is a professor in the Department of Genetics and
Vice Dean of the Faculty of AgriSciences at Stellenbosch
University. Her team's research is focused on determining the
genetic profiles of specifically African and South African
populations in order to facilitate both choice and dosage of drugs.
The article may be accessed via
Stellenbosch University's open access SUNScholar repository at (http://hdl.handle.net/10019.1/16352).
It may also be accessed via Bentham's website

National
Library Week celebrated at SU, 22-25 March 2011
Annually, National Library Week presents an opportunity to celebrate
the role of the Library in society and especially on campus.
We therefore invite you to attend a few special events during this
week.
Read in your language @ your Library: Exhibition, JS Gericke
Library
The exhibition celebrates the theme of Library
Week 2011, i.e. Read in your language @ your Library.
The lack of a reading culture is of great
concern and greater awareness should be raised.
While reading is high on the agenda from various
sectors, the Library Week theme speaks to this
issue, stresses the importance of mother tongue
instruction while at the same time promotes the
use of libraries.
Fines exemption
An exemption of fines will be conceded for all late returns
during the week of 16-21 March 2009. (Previously incurred fines not
included).

Bibliographic data
management with Refworks for Beginners
Are you struggling with managing the
referencing of your research? Refworks is a referencing software
tool, freely available to all Stellenbosch University students and
staff which allows you to create a bibliography as you move along
with your research. It automatically captures relevant referencing
information in all electronic sources you consult and inserts
references to those sources into your text in the referencing style
of your choice. For non-electronic sources, it does the same once
you have entered the details of a particular source into a template.
